Counterpoint Place

Counterpoint Place is a series of landscape paintings that challenge our understanding of the urban and the natural. It presents the boundary between the ever-growing city and remaining natural space in a sublime and sometimes tragic manner. The timeless scenes are charged with mystery and the occasional touch of whimsey. Some of them are dreamlike vistas, while others address bizarre situations that straddle the realm of the possible and the impossible.

With this series, I aim to go beyond mere aesthetics and representation to construct visual metaphors that nudge us, as viewers, to reflect on how we relate to our surroundings. How do I perceive the situation and how would I feel if I found myself there? What might happen, in the space and in my perception?  What emotions are stirred in me as I examine the paintings, some juxtaposed with found metal objects? How might these scenes change the way I view the world as I go about my daily life?

Rather than sending a unique message about our relationship with the physical environment, this series aims to plant open questions about the inexplicable phenomenon we call reality. There is no one single truth when it comes to explaining how we, as humans, are re-shaping the world. Instead of criticizing our actions or highlighting the impact of human activity, this series approaches landscape as a living organism that is in constant flux and that, at the same time, represents something different to everyone who interacts with it.

Counterpoint Place encourages us to reflect on the places we take for granted. It also challenges us to look around, look again, look with fresh eyes on familiar scenery.
